But they’ve spent so much time being violent and unyielding that Manon may be no choice but to destroy them.

I’ve invested a lot of time in these characters and I just want them to be happy, have babies, etc.

I would say though, I would disagree with the statement that Manon snapped at Dorian to change back because “what could be more uncomfortable than homosexuality?”.

There is even a scene where someone asks if there’s a secret passage the women and children can escape through! Not that Manon and Dorian have any actual chemistry, they both feel out-of-character when they are together. The wall defences of a city is completely sound, except there’s one more way in, through a grate in the water canal. And would she have taken Aelin to an isolated island if she knew? So much was packed within the colossal book, so many stories and journies wrapped up. Dorian, Manon and the rest of the Thirteen are off gathering the Crochans. But what they find in a chest is not the Lock (which, it turns out, is the Eye of Elena) but a witch mirror.

Ansel’s kingdom’s proximity to the Witch Kingdom might render her disposable—or it might make she and Manon fast friends. Romantic love is literally all her characters live for. At the end of the book, Yrene asks them why they don't marry, and none of them make a response. Here are 10 of the biggest questions—from the mysteries of barely-seen countries and tricksy villains to the question that hangs over every final book in a series packed with conflict: Who’s going to make it out alive?

That moment where Nehemia names Aelin Elentiya, she used this line: ‘I give you this name to use with honour, to use when other names grow too heavy.

You did a great job. But in a last-chance bid to save his mates life, Rowan suggests Aelin and Dorian try and forge the Lock together, sharing the burden between them. Kingdom of Ash Discussion Thread. Cora | http://www.teapartyprincess.co.uk/.

If many of the lengthy sex scenes and unnecessary romance was edited out of her books then they would be a whole lot shorter and possibly more enjoyable. Perhaps a greater time-jump to start with. Or maybe give them away because I will never read them. It influenced my university dissertation and my current novel which I’m still working on. Even then, I didn’t love them.

I’m glad I read the final book to have closure, but I feel like I could have happily read the SparkNotes version. Didn’t read the whole post bc of your spoiler alert tho haha, Aw thank you! Once learning of an impending attack on his home of Anielle, Chaol convinces his new royal friends to aid him and rushes to warn his wicked father. Brannon feared she was after something more terrible than conquest, but what does that mean? I wish that all her characters weren’t all of the same mold (this happens with ACoTaR, too). And yet most of them have one thing in common: they’re white. Molly Templeton is ready. Rowan and Aelin actually had a tangible bond between their two souls, and so I think it makes sense that it didn’t disappear as easily.

SJM’s obsession with the mating bond between females and males span all of her series. Also something to add “Wyrdmarks” are basically wholesale lifted “Charter Magic” from the Old Kingdom/Sabriel series, which bugged me more than a little bit. But she does all her secret plotting out of a desire to be in control—in control of the situation, so she’s never seen to fail, but also in control of everyone’s fate. That’s a shame that SJM has a formula already. I understand what you’re saying about the mating scar being the last to remain and what message that sends about Aelin and the tone of the series. Lives are cut short, and all kinds of relationships are tested in … Kingdom of Ash contains 121 chapters, two prologues and an epilogue. It was entertaining.

Will Aelin somehow sacrifice her mortal body, but not her Fae self?

WHAT LOSS.

I’ve only read LoTR books once but the movies? OMG how hilarious was Dorian’s scene as a woman HAHAHA. Is nothing sacred. You’ll just get pretty words and a few dream sequences.

I also found so many parallels between the sieges in this book and the battle of Helm’s Deep. Okay, so I’m at the part where Dorian is sneaking away from the camp, and he’s reminiscing about his sneaky sex with Manon. It made me laugh and it made me cry, and even with all the wtf moments, Sarah J. Maas spun a sweeping saga that reminds me that hope can always defeat darkness, and for that, I say thank you. Also, I watch the extended edition just to get the lights being lit last longer.

I started Throne of Glass but the prose felt so flat and childish I gave up. She’s only written two series and she’s already become predictable. And I would throw the book across the room for stealing one of my favorite moments, ever, in Return of the King. Please no spoilers for Kingdom of Ash in the comments!

I really enjoyed reading through your review!

It really calls to question the originality of this entire series. Just thinking about it gives me a rage-induced headache. This was probably the most defining scene in the book for me. SJM’s Pinterest for Manon’s character inspiration are littered with art of white women, Bloomsbury has previously endorsed art of Manon as a white woman, there is certainly no indication in the text that she is Asian. At the end of the book, Yrene asks them why they don't marry, and none of them make a response.

I find that discordant with the idea that they are independent. I am.

... That kind of dedication and love for Manon and a better world that they’d never get to see. He’s still a royal, human prince.

Finally, in a secluded hallway, Dorian's rage boils over and he punches the wall. And what about Mora?)

Not every character should be able to walk away unscathed as they did in KOA. I personally really enjoyed this series, but can absolutely see your point about the issues with racial representation, and I too, can’t look past so many of the lines that are blatantly stolen from LOTR and Treasure Planet. I liked Crown of Midnight, Tower of Dawn, A Court of Thorns and Roses, and A Court of Mist and Fury.

In a way, it seemed fitting that these people who the Valg king had hurt, from all corners of the land, could come together to help defeat him – especially the healer. Imagine them being a traveling king and queen, so they’d fly to Adarlan and then to the Wastes and rule together, and sometimes they’d bail completely and leave to have some steamy sex for a few days. Especially the main cast of characters. Nevertheless, Kingdom of Ash was a whirlwind read. Be warned: there will be SPOILERS ahead!!

Following the plot of Tower of Dawn (one of my FAVOURITE books in this entire series), we first encounter Chaol Westfall returning from the Southern Continent with his new wife Yrene, his friends Nesryn and Sartaq, and the might of the Khagan’s army at his back. In Sabriel, Charter marks are used in naming and spells, exactly how SJM uses them in her own works. In between the worlds, the former King of Adarlan, King Dorian I, (Dorian's father) takes his son’s place, as he wouldn't have survived forging the lock.

I haven’t read this series, or any of her books, but SJM has something I don’t like, and I don’t know why. But to say I was disappointed would be a HEFTY understatement. However he offers to marry her, and she lets him live, and even tells him her history and tries to help him bring down Erawan. View all posts by aentee @ read at midnight. If you were capable of reading SJM’s unedited and bloated book, you should be able to comprehend my 2k blog post. He introduces Celaena to Roland as Lillian Gordaina.

Malakai

Dorian, helping Yrene by joining their blood together, demands Erawan for his father's name (as Erawan was the one who wiped it from everyone's memory). -Whiteness.

I had not thought about this book in that way! Aelin/Celaena was a huge Mary Sue and but I saw Maas’s potential and hoped that with time her characters could get more depth. Haha you definitely don’t want to be spoiled on this one!

I haven’t read anything by SJM.

Fenrys and Aelin’s language!! Sometimes I get distracted by details, and it’s driving me slightly bananas that we don’t actually know where the third Wyrdkey is.

Writers, let this be a lesson, this is the sort of retcon you have to do when you don’t build a diversity into your world from the very beginning. I’ve never read any SJM but miiiight give ACOTAR a shot someday.

❤. And can this Lock send both Erawan and Maeve back where they came from, along with those dang mysterious gods?

His eyes are a sapphire blue that Celaena describes as "strikingly blue, the colour of the waters of the southern countries." But that doesn’t mean that I can’t criticise it. It brings back my creativity. Then things shifted into fae/queen mode and it plummeted downhill. I also really appreciate you expressing your honest thoughts about a series that is typically so well-loved! Without a doubt, Aelin is the toughest cookie in the jar. Dorian keeps his lonely self-busy after the events with Manon on the ship.

But they’ve spent so much time being violent and unyielding that Manon may be no choice but to destroy them.
